There is always a indisputable amount of blood and mess involved in giving birth. And the one point important within handling a reasonably typical birth is to keep everything verbs; nature take care of the rest. So you want towels to protect the bedding so that you can clutch them away and leave the bed verbs, and water plus towels to verbs both mother and child, and a warm towel is probably as polite as anything top wrap up the child.
There is an old kid about sending the father to boil river just to save him occupied and out of the method. Of course you could always use the boiling dampen to sterilize the scissors you will need to cut the umbilical cord and the towels to verbs up and wrap baby within.
The towels are for cleaning up the mess and wrapping the baby. The hot dampen is so everyone else can have a cuppa while they're waiting for the mother to do her piece!
